This review is not intended to be negative. Instead, it gives you a brief overview of what is required to be hired by this company.
Recently, I followed-up on an employment application for the part-time English tutor job position. When I asked about the qualifications/requirements for the position, this is what the director said verbatim:
“We are looking for those who have at least a Bachelor’s degree in Education, with a specialization in Math and/or English. Those hired will be required to teach/tutor BOTH math and English. Ideally, the applicants will have classroom teaching experience in a public school setting.”
Although it was disappointing, I already knew that I was not qualified based on the aforementioned. Time would not have been wasted if the qualifications/requirements were clearly stated on his website, and/or in a reply e-mail to me.
If you are not comfortable with math and you applied only for the English tutor position and vice versa, then do not apply.
Those who are NJ state certified teachers in English and/or Math, and have had extensive classroom teaching experience in a public school setting will have their applications considered, and possibly be hired.
It is a shame, because when I saw the sample pages of the English coursebook that they use, I said to myself: “I would have been able to teach/tutor children this stuff, and apply about 90% of what I learned in the CELTA course.” Unfortunately, things did not follow through again, and I am still trying to get my foot in the door in regards to the ESL teaching career field. At this time, I am discouraged. Then again, I know that eventually somebody will give me a chance someday.
