Essex Beauty Salon & Barbershop

I love this place. You can just walk in and get a haircut without having to wait ten million years or even really having to make an appointment. Franklin is really great too, he's great at cuts. Giving it 4 stars though, because lately the hours that it is open have been very sporadic. Seems like it may be closing down soon.

I live in the area and never had had any luck whatsoever getting a decent haircut. i stick with short cuts, and because there's less hair to work with to start in my case, i have to make sure the ones i have are treated well. one day i was walking by the shop and saw Franklin doing a guy's cut similar to my own and was amazed at the time he took with the clippers and how even though the guy's hair was short, franklin took the time to make sure everything was right. i immediately had him work on mine and since then i'll change my schedule to make sure i get in to see him and no one else. he's a really nice guy and well worth any hassle i have to endure trying to get to see him. but good luck making an appointment unless you speak spanish! aiieeee!!

I have been coming here for the past few years. Franklin does a great job cutting hair, especially curly hair! I have always had trouble finding someone who can cut curly hair and who knows how to use a scissor. He does speak and understand English and is very sociable. His clientel ranges in all ages and all ethnicities. $15/haircut, but it is well worth it and he does do shapeups on the hair and beard if that is what you like.

I do see women on the Beauty Salon side. I do not know how well they speak English since most of the clientele is hispanic on that side.

I just happen to stumble upon this barber shop while in the neighborhood. after a 15 minute wait (not bad at all), a gentlemen by the name of Franklin took his time with me (unusual in most places where it seems they run an assembly line operation) and made sure the cut was to my liking. great conversation, good vibe - certainly made it feel like a true barbershop, where you can be yourself and have a good time. highly recommended!
