Equinox

I used to love this gym, but the past few months the music has been crazy loud. I asked a couple of times at the front desk if they could turn down the music and nothing ever happened. The loud music really reminds you that you working out in a cramped basement. I won't renew when my membership runs out.

I have been to a lot of Equinoxes around the country in Miami, LA, Chicago, Boston and many in NYC. This is by far my least favorite though. The facility seems beautiful from the street, but the main workout room is in the basement, its dark, CRAMPED and usually so stuffy/hot you start sweating before you even workout.

On peak hours, this gym is so crowded its pretty useless. The limited amount of space to even find a spot to stretch is a serious problem. On top of that, the training staff is not friendly at all. They seem to literally get in the way and could care less about apologizing about it. They even horde equipment.

I tried out this club and am seriously thinking of joining it. I had a walkthrough with a fantastic personal trainer. Really like all of the cardio options and the cycling - that is especially appealing since I don't get a chance to cycle in NYC.

Friendly staff. Locker room and pool clean (only areas I use). Very often there is no certified lifeguard on duty. The administration requires trainers to sit in the lifeguard chair but their eyes are focused on their mobile devices rather than the swimmers! One presumes (hopes) that the trainers know CPR so this is an improvement over the old days when housekeepers were forced to sit in the lifeguard chair. No amount of complaining has led to any lasting resolution of this unfortunate situation that has continued for years.
