One of the few places in the East Village where you can get real rye bread. A funky selection of interesting cheeses at very decent prices.

Mediocre cheese selection, terrible stocking conditions and the staff has a really poor knowledge of cheese. Good prices though

I have not been in the store for two or three years. I just found out that it closed and moved and am going today. The business model, much like cheap produce stores, was to buy merchandise up against its expiration date. The seller practically gives it away to deep-discount retailers, which is why they can sell it so cheap. For instance, if Wal-Mart gets a tractor-trailer full of strawberries at 38 degrees and their cut-off is 37 degrees, the vendor is left with tens of thousands of lbs. of strawberries. This is why you can sometime buy them for $1. Same with cheese, almost expired or too warm when delivered.
