I can't say how useful this ferry is to commuters given the price, but as a way to see the city from a different perspective it's well worth the price. The ferry stops at several points along the Brooklyn shoreline and ends up on 34th street or way downtown in Manhattan. The ride itself is very relaxing and picturesque, especially as the sun is going down.
If you plan on riding just as a touristy thing or a fun way to get to Brooklyn Bridge Park, I suggest you terminate your trip downtown. On 34th street it's a LONG walk to any subways, and the bus takes it's time coming and getting across town on weekends. The other landing is much closer to train lines.
