I have never been unsatisfied with the service and product at Congdon & Sons Lumber Company in West Orange, NJ. That being said, I can not put a number on the disappointments I have experienced at the big box stores. Shop smart and local at Congdon.

Really helpful staff when ordering doors for a basement renovation and conversion. I was able to get better quality doors, and save $300 over the price I received from a big box hardware store. Seth at the front desk was really helpful.

I purchased Birch Plywood there thinking it would be better quality than the Home depot one. I was awfully wrong. Their plywood is full of voids that can run the whole length of the sheet. The core is not uniform and the outer veneers are paper thin, meaning it will ship at you if you dare looking at it too hard. Avoid buying your plywood there.

What a pleasure! I had a large order, they took it over the phone and got it right, and delivered the same day. Their prices are comparable to the "big box" stores, and the tiny bit extra you pay is offset by the free delivery. I will never go back to a "big box" store for building supplies again.
