Across the 16+ years during which Dr. Lans provided primary care as well as specific treatments for me, I came to understand, respect and appreciate what I am certain is only a small part of the considerable breadth and scope he brings to the task. Where medicine is a blend of science and art, he brings the best in command of broad knowledge and distills practical wisdom and insight from clinical experience, and from my observation his thinking and judgement are not bound by convention or other potentially limiting factors.
Where the intricacies of forces including governmental regulation, politics and more often enter in the form of unwelcome intrusion into the doctor-patient relationship, he stands in my view as an unparalleled patient advocate first.
Dr. Lans always spent as much time with me as suited my needs, if not those of his practice. His long-time staff made whatever was required happen expeditiously and pleasantly. The understatement in that is more telling of excellence than extra words I would spend describing; true heroes are more often unsung and unrecognized in the background when complex things are running smoothly and effortlessly.
This does not read like a typical physician review. That is because in the course of caring for our child with extraordinary needs and for aging parents, also with an array of mild to high-management and intensive needs, my spouse and I became involved with many physicians across many specialties over the years. It is inevitable that to increasingly educated patient/advocate consumers of medical services, an awareness of qualitative characteristics develops even when the point is not direct comparison amongst services or the providers.
Thus, I think my evaluation is fair and balanced. I like to think Dr. Lans might be surprised to know that I hold this opinion because it wasn't transmitted during the course of our doctor-patient relationship (I've relocated out of state), and it was more typical for me to question or be (politely enough, I hope!) critical of conventions, realities or a status-quo that I disagreed with or found to come up short. More often than not, that didn't relate directly to me but to someone to whom I was closely attached; thus, this aspect was limited in our contact but in hindsight, it added to my view of Dr. Lans as a physician in practice.
