As someone who already has a fixed-wing license, I can speak confidently about my experience with Core Heli.
Taking a helicopter lesson (or, thinking more long-term, and going for a license) requires several key factors, and this flight school seems to have it all:
Factor #1: Customer service. Every single person I encountered, from the person answering emails to the person greeting me when I walked in to the instructor--and everyone along the way--made a real impression on me in terms of friendliness, understanding, and going out of their way to ensure that I was getting the best possible experience.
Factor #2: Communication. A school with good communication will actually save you quite a bit of time and money because you will stand to understand things faster and accomplish your goals faster. At the very least, even if you're just trying out one flight, it still means the difference between an exciting-but-confusing adventure and a truly enjoyable, thrilling, and memorable one.
Factor #3: Upkeep. When engaging in any serious activities, you want to be sure that the equipment is maintained seriously and properly. The impeccable state of their facilities is one clear indicator of this, as is the apparent dedication to really clean and safe equipment.
Factor #4: Availability. A flight school that can easily accommodate your schedule is of paramount importance. Core Heli was able to give me the exact time slot that I requested, and was very diligent about staying in touch about any notifications and reminders. Also, they currently have 3 choppers in their employ, making it even easier to get the timeslot you would like without much waiting.
Factor #5: Location. A flight school's location is important for two reasons: (a) because you want to be able to get to it without too much trouble--and with Core Heli being right outside NYC at Linden Airport, it is probably one of the most easily accessible school to anyone from Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island, the Bronx, and many parts of central NJ. Also, the location is important for long-term students (b) because you want a school that can give you lots of opportunity to practice flying in all different types of airspace, and with Core Heli located right by the NYC airspace, you have a really great opportunity there.
As for the introductory flight itself (I've always wanted to transition from fixed-wing to choppers), I found it exhilarating and highly recommend it to anyone and everyone--even people who aren't looking to pursue anything long-term (even as a one-time experience, this is something everyone should experience at least once)!
They offer a great range of add-ons to the introductory flight, such as extended time and additional maneuvers, both of which are highly recommended (especially the extended time). They also take the time to give you a full "briefing" beforehand, teaching you the basics of flying helicopters, helicopter safety, and answering all questions.
In short, I encourage everyone reading this to go and try them out at least once! You will *not* be disappointed in the least. The only thing you might ever complain about is your new addiction! :)
