phone has been ringing for over 15 minutes and no one has picked up!.... update... called consulate in Washington DC.. picked up on first ring, pressed the extension I wanted. My question was answered, total time maybe 5 minutes total time spent.

I had a problem and I feel strongly that the receptionist was not only considerate, he really listened to me, and tried to help as much as he could, even double checking that they could not fix the problem. So while the problem remains, he did everything he could possibly do.

I was enthusiastic about my upcoming travel to Portugal because I have heard how beautiful the country and the people are. However, my enthusiasm has been completed defeated.
I have been calling both consulates in New York and Newark numerous times since last Monday. Most of the time, I don't even get a voicemail. When I get to a voicemail, I would leave a message for them to call me back.
I have only two simple questions: 1) what are the required documents for visa application; 2) what are the times I can come in. Is it asking too much to ask you pick up your phone? Anyone could help me?
I wish I am not traveling to Portugal, so I don't have to go through this nonsense.

I want to share with users the experience that I had at the Portuguese consulate. The appointment times are really respected and are treated with great courtesy really very happy to have been at that consulate.

I had an excellent experience at Portuguese Consulate in Newark. I asked them for an appointment just few days before my travel...although the guy on phone said it will be difficult to get an appointment still he made a slot to accommodate me. The appointment was scheduled at 9 AM and I was called in at 9.05 AM. I was accompanied with my wife and kids. Although my wife and daughter did not need a visa, still they were offered to come and sit inside with me and my son (visa applicants). The visa officer (Cristina Jorge) was really pleasant, helpful and kind person. My kids were being a bit naughty (as all young kids!!) but nobody said anything...it was really a smooth and easy process...though I am still waiting for my visa (I applied it 2 days back) but all in all I am happy with the dealing of Portuguese Consulate.
This is the third Portuguese Consulate in the World that I have applied for visa in last 10 years. Newark office is the best so far.
