I did a sail on the Pioneer, which is a historical ship that's technically part of the South Street Seaport museum. You just get the tickets via Circle Line. I *loved* the sail and would go again. Too bad they only sail through the end of October.
The Pioneer is an actual sailboat, though they do have a motor for maneuvering around the dock areas. Since it's part of the Museum, they encourage people to help with raising the sails and to ask questions about how things work. Or, you can just enjoy the trip. We did a circle, going past Brooklyn, the Statue of Liberty, and Governor's Island.
It's not the best for taking pictures since the boat is always moving. And when there are choppy waters you really feel it. I never felt unsafe, but I am glad I brought a raincoat and shoes that did not mind getting a bit wet.
If you get the chance to go, I suggest going on one of the evening sails. Watching the sun set in the West is breathtaking.

Took a ride on the Zephr last night. It was really bumpy and rocked all night, making it difficult to walk and dance. The ship was very warm and I had to ask the staff to open the doors by the DJ booth. The DJ played requests and all kinds of music.
Dance floor was a good size for at least 45 people.
The first floor has a bar with 2 tenders and serve generous size drinks. There is a sitting area on the sides booth style.
Up the stairs is another bar with seats and a small area to dine. Parties are served food, which was what a group of munching on- This was a tour group put on the ship to see the waterside of NYC.
This was the BEST view and closest ever to Lady Liberty.
