My husband and I once shopped at Burgess Chemists because of its conveniently close proximity to our apartment. Unfortunately, the extremely rude and patronizing behavior of its employees has dissuaded us from ever patronizing this location again.
Jose and I are 26 and 23 respectively, and appear younger than we are. We're accustomed to being confused for teenagers - but this doesn't excuse the treatment Jose received at Burgess Chemist.
On the first occasion, Jose (an immigrant) requested a drug used in his old country used for the treatment of yeast infections. The pharmacist rudely told him that the drug was illegal in America and that it required a prescription. She offered no alternative drug as a suggestion.
On the second, Jose had previously purchased cough medicine a month prior. When he entered the shop again and attempted to purchase another package, the pharmacist said, "You buy this a lot. You should go to a doctor." This was last fall during cold season, and my husband, not yet possessing a green card, did not have the option of visiting a physician.
My husband does not deserve to be treated with suspicion and contempt for the crime of being a young man and an immigrant. Even if you are not a young person, I wouldn't recommend going to Burgess Chemist, as their selection is unimpressive: the pharmacy aisle at the Shop-Rite only a minute down the street is probably larger and more varied. And of course, not being treated like a criminal by the cashiers is certainly a bonus.
