I originally wrote this review for yelp 2 years ago. Not sure if the business changed (since I never went back) but this was my experience.
I decided to try this dry cleaner since it was down the street, it seemed reputable enough (the signage bragged in business since 1942?) and had a decent web page. Since I am hesitant to try an dry cleaners not associated with some type of association, I really didn't have any choice since all choices were all in Manhattan.
So for my first time, I decided to do a test run...a couple of Target Proenza silk shirts and my son's blazer for his school dance. Those came back fine and dandy. With that cleared, I decided to turn in my daughter's dupioni silk dress and my DH's John Varvatos cashmere/wool pants. After picking up the items (after dropping off $150 of winter coats), I discovered at home that her dress was filled with what looked like clear water stains throughout the whole dress, the straitions in the silk had tiny rolls of lint and pilling and the pants had 2 small holes in it. I called the owner to report the problem and came in to show him the damage.
I told him that the dress was only worn for 2 hours in church and that the only stains were at the bottom made by a drop of jam from a donut. He began to tell me there was no way they could have made it, that my daughter must have made it and never in his whole time in business have they caused stains on the dress. It was a good thing I marked all the stains with painter's tape because I had plenty of evidence to show that if my daughter made it how would she be able to reach in the back of the dress near the shoulder and into the creases in the back near the empire waist, etc. There were too many stains in way too hard places to reach by a toddler. Not to mention most of the stains were in the back of the dress. I was livid at the way they refused to take responsibility of the dress and lay the blame on me.
When I showed the holes left in the pants, he also refused the damage on that (even though he touched the material and admitted that it fairly brand new material). I had asked to have it repaired which I thought was standard to have a tailor on hand in case of any damage. He refused.
All in all, they did try to clean the dress 2 more times. I told them it was ok if they couldn't remove the original stain I had brought the dress in for but it was unacceptable to have it returned with mutiple stains. Ironically, the original stain was removed but not the "chemical water" stains. The excuses I received ranged from "it must be invisible stains" to "children shouldn't be wearing that kind of material anyways."
When I tried to file a complaint with the BBB, the company was not listed. Very strange considering how this company bragged about being in business since the 1940's.
I will say that our winter coats fared far better. No damage there. But I would not trust them with expensive or delicate fabrics. And with customer service like that...totally unacceptable which is why I'm giving 1 star. To tell me that clothing choices for my children is my fault was ridiculous.
I was extremely happy to find a dry cleaners/tailor shop about 3 doors down that just opened. Very honest, very helpful so I'm happy to bring my business to them.
For reasons stated above, I definitely would not recommend them. Also, they only take cash.
