This museum is pay as you wish. One of my favorite destinations in Brooklyn. They do a great job with their special exhibits. They give curators a lot of space to work with.

One of my favorite museums in the country. Just fyi I have a slight bias to this place as I've been coming here since I was a kid and it was one of my hidden sanctuaries. It's seconds from the subway, houses one of the largest African art collections in North America and hosts a kick ass monthly party sponsored by Target.
The curation of special exhibits has been phenomenal over the past 7 years encompassing various sub and counter cultural phenomena.
Let's get back to this monthly party.
When it first started it was crazy no holds bar dance party spilling into the street over the years it has evolved to a more see and be seen party where all the cool kids go. On the plus side it is an all ages event that also allows people into the museum and special exhibits for free.

It's not the Met, but that said I think it is a very well put together museum with a nice focus on modern works, especially those about the New York area. On my most recent visit the floors were:
Ground: African.
2: Closed for renovations.
3: Ancient Egyptian (if you like this, you are definitely better off going to the met, kind of pointless but has some nice rooms on mummys).
4: Mostly a single artist.
5: An exhibit about Coney Island, which I surprisingly found to be very informative.

Brooklyn Museum is a donation-based organization, which I truly appreciate. If you don't have much money, they allow you to still enjoy art and culture for a few bucks.
I've had the pleasure of seeing some awesome exhibitions back in September when I visited Brooklyn Museum. Some of those include KAWS (the big, awesome sculpture at the entrance lobby), FAILE art exhibition, and the The Rise of Sneaker Culture exhibition. All were superb!
It goes to show the caliber of artists and types of art they support and I love it.
