I hate this place . I've had a previous bad experience with this shelter more than one time . Recently I lost my house to a fire and fortunately, my cat (tiger) ran away and was able to escape the flames . Unfortunately , I lost him and I was devastated. After countless days of looking , putting of flyers , making Ad's, calling shelters .. I decided I'd call Bergen County animal shelter ( although I despised the people working there). As I told them my situation, the woman replied "Well there's too many cats here , I can't look for your cat. And even if we did find him outside , we wouldn't adopt him to you anyway. You better hope he's friendly because if he's not , we pretty much put them to sleep and kill them". I was so heartbroken that my cat can possibly go through this . I was furious and have hated the people at this shelter ever since they took my cat that escaped and wouldn't give her back because they told me I'm a bad owner for not watching over her well enough . She ran away ONCE , she was taken great care of and I loved her more than anything . They adopted her out and everytime I begged and cried to at least see her , they denied me and told me to replace her with another cat ; I was only 15 years old and even my father was with me asking them if they can just understand it wasn't done purposely . THIS PLACE IS TERRIBLE ! (after countless days of looking for tiger and after having the entire neighborhood volunteering to lookout for him, I finally found my cat I had lost during the fire ) at least this rating has a good ending .

We just brought home Sawyer and it is clear that he loves us as much as we love him. We are so grateful to the wonderful folks at the Bergen County Animal Shelter for the obvious love and attention that they have towards these animals.

I have adopted twice from the Bergen County Animal Shelter. Both of my babies are fantastic. The staff really does care about the animals in their care My one concern is that the seem to be short handed these days. and need more help. I highly recommend visiting to find a fur ever friend

I adopted two dogs separately. One was was a beautiful blonde purebred Cocker Spaniel whom I named Lady back in 1989. Sweetest little dog. She passed away in 1997. 2 months after Lady. Went back and adopted an 8 month old Jack Russell Beagle mix whom I named Coco. Until unfortunately she came with some issues. But I kept up with her training. Very playful and crazy. Fun to watch. Unfortunately I had to put Coco to sleep 4 days ago at the age of 18 yrs old. She had bad arthritis and could hardly walk. I miss her terribly. But she lived a long and healthy life. She is no longer suffering and in pain. I love and miss you girly. If and when I decide to adopt another dog I will definitely be back..

Having volunteered at numerous shelters back home in CA, I was eager to check out the shelter closest to me here in NJ after moving. I was dismayed to see how little the staff seemed to care about finding these animals homes. It is my experience that the best practice for finding an animal a home is in a person's contact with that animal. Here you aren't allowed to hold any of the animals without first filling out an extensive form. Once that form is filled out the amount of time you get with the animal is dreadfully slim. I am even more disturbed that this practice is being held by a kill shelter. In order to prevent unnecessary euthanizations you need to encourage adoption. After my visit I visited 2 different shelters, both of which do not have this baffling protocol. If you're interested in adopting please avoid this shelter, there are better ones in the area.
