Avis Car Rental

I use this facility a lot for Business Rentals. The associates at this facility do their best to provide great service. Sometimes there are challenges like with not getting a full tank of gas, the Avis Reservation system adjusting the rates if returned a early or late but the team usually tries to professionally work with me to resolve the issues.

I think the older reviews may refer to staff that are no longer at that location. I was treated with respectful friendliness and I didn't wait in a line at all. The whole experience went well. It is a little more effort to go inside the mall for the paperwork and then back out to the parking lot to find the car. And then reverse that when you return the car. It will be problematic for me at some point that there's no key drop box. I'll consider Avis first when my rental times fall within their business hours.

I want to be clear from the start that the manager on duty as well as the customer service representatives at the time did their best with an impossible situation laid out for them. They treated everyone with respect and dignity, and handled the situation as diplomatically as they could, doing their best to provide the services promised.

That being said...

Worst car rental experience I have ever had. I pre-paid for my car weeks in advance, along with many in the crowd (based on my unofficial conversations), and we still ended up waiting for hours to get a car. Many of the people that had to wait for several hours ended up going home around 10:00 p.m. without any car to use for the Thanksgiving holiday.

I never thought I'd come across a company so horrifically managed in the booking department, but my search is over now that I've found Avis. I can only hope for the other poor souls that book through them that they'll fix their operations, but I know I'll never chance it again. Not sure how corporate figures that dozens of people that have PAID IN ADVANCE will fail to show up, but clearly somebody does.

With hope, the employees at this location will find jobs for other car rental companies that are better organized. They deserve better!

The Avis Rental car desk is in the Newport Center Mall convenient to Hoboken, Jersey City and Bayonne, NJ. I picked up the car in the evening at about 6:30 pm. It took about 10 minutes waiting on line which is not bad. Got processed by the Avis representative and went over to the parking area to pick up and drive away with my Ford Escort. The Avis representative was courteous, knowledgeable and worked efficitenly to get me into my rental car. The car was clean, the fuel tank was full, and driving out of the lot was easy. It took all of 10 minutes to return the car and get my receipt once I finished my trip. I had a good experience with Avis at Newport Center Mall. I have reserved cars there before and think the service is good and efficient.

Slow service and hard to find. One star for clean and reliable cars.

I rented cars from this location several times (typically weekends early am), always stuck in the queue for at least half an hour due to the slow processing pace at the rental counter. Unfortunately, this also applies to returning the car (for me, typically Monday early am), as there is no out-of-hours drop-off, and no dedicated key drop-off during regular hours. Seriously Avis: put up a box and spare your customers the frustrating wasting of time, at least for returns!

If this is your first time here (and you notice the lack of adequate signs for Avis): rental counter is inside the main mall. Car pick up is in the adjacent parking lot on the 2nd level. (Good luck finding the Avis staff keeping the keys here, who usually seems to be running between upper and lower decks and the rental counter). Return the car in the same parking garage - follow the signs for "Dollar" until you pass by the dedicated Avis spots. Don't expect to have an Avis member of staff be present to check your car: just head straight back to the rental counter in the mall, don't forget the red/white rental agreement, the keys and the parking ticket.
