Our experience with hospice was not very good from the very beginning. My dad was in rehab and when it became evident he was not going to recover we looked into hospice. We contacted several companies and went with Ascend because they agreed to 7 day/2 hr care. We asked to start when he got home as we could not afford to keep him in the nursing home. The started while he was in the nursing home leaving us with a $900 bill. The delivery of equipment was late causing a 6 hour delay in getting him home. They did not tell us he need an inhome nurse evaluation before in home care could start. The aide came once and them did not show the next day. The nurse went to the wrong house, even though she had been there 2 days before. Telling the daughter(who was waiting for her at the door) that she was there banging on the front door. We ran out of supplies because of this lapse in visits. Finally it seemed things were working out. The aide was fabulous, very caring. In the last couple of days of my dad's life we were expecting more in home care/visits as was presented to us. When we called in the middle of the night asking for someone to come we were told there was no one available. Someone came the next day. It was clear my dad was "actively dying" at this point and yet no one stayed to help the family. We were very disappointed in the services we received versus those that were presented to us. We heard over and over "the family are the primary caregivers". Not something you want to hear when a loved one is dying. Certainly the support we got was not worth the $200 hospice was given to "support" the family.
