It was this school that was attended by one pairs of twins, Marge Ganser and Mary Ann Ganser, and sisters Mary Weiss and Liz Weiss, who lived a few blocks apart. Around 1963/64 they teamed to form The Shangri-Las.
They were inspired by other grups like Little Anthony and the Imperials and the Four Seasons and soon after came to the attention of Artie Ripp who had founded Kama Sutra Productions.
Songwriters needed performers and performers needed recordists and distributors.
When the Shangri-Las recorded ‘Walkin’ in the Sand’ the girls were 15 (Mary), 16 (the twins) and 17.
Their next recording was ‘Leader of the Pack’.
