June, 2015: I was robbed of my purse in Bologna, Italy on May 30. Contrary to the ads by Amex of delivering new cards easily to anywhere in the world, I had the worst experience of getting a new Platinum card sent to my next destination in Sorrento. I spent hours and days on my cell phone, going way over my allotted global minutes by hundreds of dollars, trying to find out where the card was and who was responsible for its delivery. I spoke with many different Customer Service reps including supervisors, people in the Card Replacement Group and Global Assist who had no idea where the card was sent to or if it was sent at all. I was desperate because I had no ID cards, money or credit cards and had to pay for hotels, etc. However I must commend Global Assist in Phoenix for paying for my hotel bill in Bologna and a supervisor in Customer Service in Phoenix for getting a card to me at my final destination before departing for home. This whole episode took 4 weeks.

Here are the problems I have been facing with American Express
I moved from New Jersey to New York in May 2012. I was not aware of any pending charges. American Express didn't bother to call or email me. After many months they are calling me and charging huge penalties. If they could have informed me earlier by phone or email there would have been no problem at all.
I have stopped using American Express Card since 2011
Still I am receiving the following emails from 2011-2015 "We would like to inform you that your American Express® Corporate Card is due for renewal soon". They don't provide any email or phone contact making them totally un-approachable.
Capital One or Discover credit cards are much better. They work faster and they are always approachable.

More than a decade. That is how long we have used Amex for all our purchases for our small business. The day after the bill was paid, the new cycle date, they demanded next months payment immediately, and when we said its not due until June, they suspended the charging until payment is made for Junes bill 2015. They dropped us from no limit to below what we owe on pay over time, and next months bill totals.We just paid our annual fee in April, then they decide to change terms and conditions? We have never ever been late with a payment either. High credit scores, and no reason for this. I will pay them in June, because it is owed, but, switching all bills to chase. Cashed in all our reward points, I am sure this is what happened with a lot of people in 2008 before the market crashed. Everyone better watch out, 401k's investment accounts, better move your funds somewhere to be safe. This is a rerun on 08. They offered an appeal of sending in financial docs, which we did do, but, haven't heard back from them yet.

I’ve been a loyal AMEX member for over 15 years with a credit line of $75K. As a newly-wed I attempted to gain a card with my account number for my new wife. For some reason AMEX has denied granting a card with my account number with her name due to her ex-husband poor credit and her name was associated with his name. For the life of me, I don’t understand why someone (who charges over $50K a year on his card) is denied a second card for his wife. At this time I would rate AMEX as low as I can and will think about using the VISA card from this time forward. However, AMEX has to be admired for employing their NEW or ADDITIONAL account holder processing center staff in INDIA. With all the people in the USA looking for work, AMEX has to rely on the people of INDA to handle their calls. I guess it’s easier to deny someone a card when you can’t speak clear English. Thank You AMEX.
I agree with Deborah Newman (below), AMERICAN EXPRESS is not the company it once used to be. I think they should rename the company to INDIA EXPRESS because of their lack of customer service and support. They were dependable and would stick beside their customers. Their quality of Customer Service is what Clark Howard (WSB-AM-750 radio) calls NO-CUSTOMER SERVICE.

American Express is supposedly a trusted company that screwed both my company and i personally. All of a sudden i got a freeze on my business cards and no one could answer why that happened and would not do a thing about it. I pay taxes, i run a licensed business, and paid in full every month. They then asked for me to fax information regarding my company's finances which would take about a week for a review. No credit card for a week? How do you run a business that requires many materials a day for your company to strive? I "trusted" amex and that is the card/company who i solely relied on to do so. (you should have a back up card and make sure you have a credit limit that satisfies your needs because i did not) That is until they froze the cards for a reason they could not explain.
I got very upset with their customer service and the way they can put a random hold on the account without notifying you and so i decided to cash in all the points and close my accounts for the incidents they created. Then 1 month later i got a phone call from United Recovery which is a debt collector that i thought was a scam. Turns out it was not, amex actually sent me to a debt collector without notifying me that one of my cards had a remaining balance on it, even though customer service verified i had a $0 balance. Not only that got me flustered, but the fact that i have auto bill pay set up to pay in full for every account i own..
Now, amex is telling me to speak with the debt collector and the debt collector is telling me to speak with amex.. One big circle! No progress, no one from american express will help nor even let me call in any more.
