I strongly urge you to avoid using Advantage Movers (Phil Dersamo, Vic Rossi, et al). Here are some of our experiences: The final fee for the move was 75% over the estimate, even though Mr. Dersamo personally inspected our home prior to the move. The packing and loading time was 22 hours (estimate = 14), which meant that the movers finished working at 5 am the next day, leaving us to broom sweep the house after losing a night’s sleep and then go immediately to our closing. The movers then arrived 5 hours late for our delivery due to a “truck breakdown,” which meant they could not finish the delivery that day. They refused to complete the delivery the following day because they would not accept our offer to have our apartment building staff accept the items they were delivering late, which meant we had to lose another day from work. Our unpacking of boxes was severely hampered because Advantage did not use any packing list, so there was not even a way to track whether all the boxes had been delivered. Also, the boxes were not labeled usefully, e.g., many simply said “Basement,” indicating that the items had originally been from that floor. Some items, such as a step-stool, were lost without explanation. A glass coffee-table top was broken because they dropped it on the sidewalk; it took a month for them to repair and return it. They also broke the glass on several pictures. When they delivered our bedroom dresser, they worked for about 30 minutes to get it through a hallway and into the bedroom, at which point Dmitry, the foreman, stated, “It won’t fit,” and left the job site. After taking a look myself, I explained to the crew how to get the dresser into the bedroom, which they did in 5 minutes. Unfortunately Dmitry hadn’t returned, so he did not get a chance to learn how it was done.
Moving is a difficult experience, but it does not have to be a miserable one. Do not use Advantage Movers unless you are prepared to cope with bad faith estimates, serious delays, broken and lost items, disorganized and sloppy packing, and general incompetence.
