The coolest place in the Village, Walk down the stairs and enter an jazz/blues bar that has been around for years. It can get very crowded, so get there early, you can sit through all sets, paying $10 but its worth it. Reasonable drink costs.. no food... excellent spot

A nice little quaint jazz bar in the village. Great vibe and great music. Two drink minimum to hang out and support the musicians. It's worth it.

My all time favorite Jazz & Blues bar in NYC, the place looks awful but is all about the music here, good drinks and beers selection. If you like music and don't mind the rundown location you will love this place. Highly recommended

OK look- they have no food and a two drink minimum per set and there is a cover charge if you get there after about 7pm. Take that as a given, 55bar is an institution. Great jazz, perhaps the best in NY. Drink and listen.

Loved the location. Felt like I was in my grandparent's basement (this is a good thing for me). However, it was really a turn off after having ordered the two drink minimum for each set that the next band required a $15 cover (it was written on the chalkboard outside but it was very hard to see, we notice it as we left). The waitstaff pretty much squashed any good vibe that occurred. They were slow at the bar, not friendly, and quite frankly seemed to really dislike their job. After asking everyone to pay $15 70% of the clientele left. I understand how we have to support our artists I truly do but the whole vibe of the place turned me off. This experience made me reflect on how what it must have really been like back in the 60s to hear good music for very reasonable price or free. Now it's hardly possible because these locations have to pay so much in rent that all they care about is money. It's reflection of how our society has changed. New York is a gentrified money grabbing city and it shows by how other people treat each other in venues like this one.
