I used to love coming to 5 burros, especially during the warmer months spring and summer its so nice to come and grab something to eat on Austin. However in the past year or so the quality of service has diminished entirely. The bartenders are so rude, the staff is not organized at all and you'll basically be coming in to work for yourself having to search for employees to help you.
My last time there a few nights ago the bartender Carlos wouldn't even look my way despite multiple attempts by me and my friends to get his attention. I ended up leaving after his rude comment saying "so what?!" when he realized we were waiting.
The quality of food isn't even worth the 1+ hour wait anymore, it's all just a big waste of time now.

The food (and margaritas ) deserve 5 stars because it's phenomenal! However the wait is soooo long to get a table, but honestly it is worth the wait. The only reason I took off one star is because the times that I have gone, the hostess is never in the front which is a little annoying. I understand it is really crammed in the front but while I was waiting near the bar many people came inside to give her their names to wait for a table and she was no where to be found! This happened multiple times. The waiters are polite but don't really come check up on you very often. But the food is AMAZING!

This staple in Forest Hills is one of my favorites for over 7 years. Its a small, narrow restaurant with funky, simple décor. The wait is normally over 45min even on weekdays. The bar is normally packed - even on weekdays. In other words, expect to wait. I normally grab a drink at the bar while I wait for my table. My favorite is the original frozen margarita with salt on the rim. That drink is always served in a small mason jar. Other drinks are served differently. I am not a fan of the flavored drinks as the concentrated liquid transforms the drink into something my palate doesn't approve - too bitter.
The food is average - It's my favorite b/c of the margarita. I've ordered the quesadilla, tacos, steak, special of the day, etc. They don't necessarily put their own special twist on it hence why I call it average. I do love their chips and salsa, which is complimentary even at the bar, because the salsa comes with heat.
The service is okay. Some days the servers are on their game and other days you have to wave them over. This happens on both busy and slow days, so I don't get it. One thing for sure is that the staff is polite.
I understand the concept, if it's not broken, don't fix it. However, I do wish they incorporated more options to their menu... maybe different house-made salsas for the chips or tacos... possibly expanding their location since the wait can get out of hand ... and most importantly, keep the music on - right now there's a jukebox which the patrons must pay to hear their favorite tunes, otherwise no music will play for an extended period of time.
Overall, it's a quaint restaurant with yummy margaritas. Average food. Average service. Fortunately, the average-ness won't stop me from returning - see you soon 5 Burros!

Yes, it is divey and loud and the patrons who stand outside look like douchebags, so I had always avoided this place despite passing it hundreds of times. But, in need of a late night taco and beer fix, I headed over. It was loud and tight, the music was not always Spanish due to the existence of the jukebox, and the douchebags were abundant. Nevertheless, the tacos were delish (nothing in comparison to others I've had, but they really hit the spot), the chips and salsa were good, and since I sat at the bar, I had the pleasure of being waited on by the impressively efficient and attentive bartender, Manny. All in all, it got the job done and I had no complaints when I left. I actually do plan on going back and trying more of their food, but only after midnight when there are less people.

Decided to stop by for a quick bite one day as we were in the neighborhood. A "quick bite" didn't really work out in our favor that afternoon. It wasn't too busy that day, so not sure why everything took so long which is why I knocked it down a star.
The decor on the inside was really cool and felt kind of nostalgic, the food was really good but the fact that we sat there for about 15 minutes before we even got menu's and then another 20 plus to get an order of nachos and a salad, then another 15 minutes after we were done eating to get a check. In all, our quick bite ended up being a little over an hour.
Besides that, I have to say again that the food was great, so if we go back again, hopefully the service will be quicker.
