For those who struggle with mental illness or substance abuse addiction, finding the right treatment program can seem overwhelming. But the right treatment program can mean the difference between long-term success and chronic relapse. Understanding what to expect when you or your loved one begins treatment can help make the process seem less daunting. Knowing you have a problem and reaching out for help is the most important step on the path to a drug-free life.
Medically-supervised detox is the first stage of addiction treatment. Studies show that those who go through detox in a detox center rather than on their own greatly increase the likelihood of treatment success. Medically supervised detox facilities provide 24-hour patient monitoring by trained medical personnel. Professionals at our Addiction Centers in Nj are on hand to provide you or your loved one with medications and therapies needed to help with difficult withdrawal symptoms in a safe manner. Knowing trained medical staff members are there for you during the entire detox phase helps reduce the fear that is often associated with the process.
After detox is complete, you or your loved one will begin the process of diagnosis. Many who struggle with addiction have an underlying mental illness that is contributing to or causing the problem. Dual diagnosis facilities diagnose and treat the mental illness and the addiction simultaneously. Through medication, psychotherapy, group therapy, family therapy and other holistic treatment options, the person struggling with addiction and mental illness receives comprehensive treatment for both issues.
Once a diagnosis has been reached, addiction treatment and/or mental health treatment can begin. There are two options when it comes to addiction and mental health treatment: inpatient treatment and outpatient treatment. Your intake counselor will help you or your loved one understand which type of treatment your insurance will pay for and what is best for your unique situation. Inpatient treatment programs typically last 30, 60 or 90 days depending on the length and severity of the addiction.
Outpatient treatment can last the same lengths of time, but the patient begins by traveling to the facility on a daily basis and then gradually reduces the amount of time spent in treatment on a weekly basis. Treatment programs provide individual counseling, group therapy and family sessions depending on the need of the individual. Other holistic options, such as nutrition counseling, meditation, yoga and exercise classes, life skills and job training can also be part of the treatment regimen. Treating the whole patient – body, mind and spirit – greatly enhances the treatment experience and the likelihood of success.
One of the most important parts of the rehab process is the aftercare program. Aftercare programs typically consist of regular attendance at support groups, regular counseling sessions and meetings with an accountability or sobriety partner. Aftercare programs can be found through a treatment facility or other 12-step program. Sober living homes can also be an important part of aftercare if a transitional residence is needed before returning home.

Read MoreThe office visits each day were quick and comfortable. The medications helped me rest and allowed me to have a good night sleep. I was able to call the Dr. (Alexander) late at night to adjust my medication to better fit my needs. The Dr. was able to answer all my questions and explained what was going on with my body.
Justin from Cliffside Park, NJIrina did a great job talking to my son. She is very compassionate but not afraid to tell it like it is and get honest with the patients. She spent time explaining things and talking to both of us. She also spent extra time with me clarifying several things. So far I have been satisfied. It was difficult being the caregiver, but if this works it will be worth it. All of the staff were very nice and helpful.
Deb from Cliffside Park, NJGreat, very helpful regarding intake. My son is doing great! I wish I would have known about you 2 years ago because I believe my son’s girlfriend would be here today if we had known. We would still come to you if we could not find anyone here. Wish you had Saturdays for injections only.
