No. 8 Michigan State University gymnastics is continuing a record-breaking 2025 season with a historic postseason run. The Spartans are headed to the NCAA Championships semifinals for just the second time in program history — and the first since 1988 — after scoring a 198.000 in the regional final.

MSU will compete against No. 1 LSU, No. 5 UCLA and No. 4 Utah in the NCAA Championships semifinals.

In the last three seasons the Spartans have been close to nationals but could not finish as a top two team in the regional finals. In the 2025 season the path was different, MSU placed first in the regional second round and second at the regional final.

"This was one of the steps we were missing from past years, coming in first in the semifinals," MSU gymnastics head coach Mike Rowe said. "We got to the regional final last year, and something just went wrong and we couldn’t put our finger on it. And we just thought if we work more on us and what’s going on and positive thoughts and all that kind of thing. I think that helped a lot."

2024 Season

In 2024, the Spartans finished with a 29-7 overall record and were crowned Big Ten champions for the first time in program history. MSU placed second in the NCAA Regional Second Round with a score of 197.475 behind Utah, then finished fourth in the regional final behind Florida, Utah and Missouri. Senior Skyla Schulte qualified for the NCAA Championships on floor exercise, while junior Nikki Smith qualified on balance beam.

2023 Season

In 2023, MSU went 25-5 overall and placed second at the Big Ten Championships behind Cal. The Spartans then placed second in the NCAA Regional Second Round with a score of 196.825, again behind Cal, and finished third in the regional final behind Cal and Florida. Fifth-year Delanie Harkness qualified for the NCAA Championships on floor exercise, while senior Gabrielle Stephen competed on balance beam.

2022 Season

In 2022, the Spartans finished with a 13-4 overall record and placed second at the Big Ten Championships behind Michigan. MSU took second in the NCAA Regional Second Round with a score of 197.235 behind Alabama and finished third in the regional final behind Alabama and Utah.
