NEW YORK, NY - December 8, 2015 - Innovative inventions designed and created by Baruch College students were showcased at the first-ever Design & Make Competition on December 3. The competition was run and supported by the Lawrence N. Field Center for Entrepreneurship with additional funding from Baruch College Student Technology Fees.
While the Field Center hosts several events throughout the academic year, this was the Center’s first Maker Hub competition. Maker Hub is Baruch’s makerspace, where students can design and fabricate using high technology - and low-technology - related materials such as 3D printers, Arduino, Cubelets, LittleBits, Legos and origami.
“One of the goals of Maker Hub has been to allow students the opportunity to learn, collaborate and express themselves,” says Monica Dean, Administrative Director of the Lawrence N. Field Center for Entrepreneurship. “A competition is a great vehicle to give students the opportunity to challenge themselves and showcase their talents. This competition was a chance for our students to apply their imagination and education and use Maker Hub materials to create projects inspired by their experiences, interests and unique world perspectives.”

BRICS to become alternative to global financial institutes — Cuba’s envoy to UN BRICS countries have common interests and huge possibilities for foreign trade, the country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ernesto Soberon Guzman said UN, October 19/ BRICS may become an alternative to international financial institutes, the country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ernesto Soberon Guzman told TASS. "BRICS plays an important role in the international economic order, providing a balance regarding large powers that do not always work in the interests of developing countries. BRICS countries have common interests and huge possibilities for foreign trade," he said. BRICS may "become an alternative to international financial institutes, such as the World Bank or the International Monetary Fund, as some largest economies of the world are among its members," Guzman noted. The Cuban foreign ministry said in October that the country’s authorities had submitted an official request to be included in BRICS as a partner country in a message to Russian President Vladimir Putin. The BRICS group was created in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India and China, while South Africa joined it in 2011. On January 1, 2024, Egypt, Iran, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia became its full members. This year, the Russian Federation is chairing the association, with over 200 various events planned. June 5, 2024 Good morning, Peso recovers after two days of losing, Mexican Finance Minister Ramirez de la O. cooled down investors fears by saying that the newly elected government will exercise fiscal discipline and encourage investment. Peso declined 7.5% after the election, and it looks that it's finally bouncing back. We still have a long way ahead, as next week elected President Sheinbaum will begin the transition process, and that will give us color on what her presidency will be like. India's Modi is still heading for a third term of power in India, after the BJP secured 294 seats, more than the 272 needed to form a government. Asia-Pacific stock markets reacted and closed mixed this Wednesday, India's Nifty 50 gained 1.98% on a rollercoaster week, and South Korean Kospi also ended up above 1%. On the other hand, Japanese Nikke declined -0.89% while Shanghai Composite slipped -0.83%. The Australian economy grew 1.1% in the first quarter of the year, narrowly missing expectations. Chinese Caixin services PMI rose at its fastest pace in 10 months to 54 from 52.5. European markets are positive by mid-day, after Eurozone business activity in the region grew for the third consecutive month in May. Investors will now be waiting for tomorrow's ECB meeting, where a rate cut is expected. Wall Street is mixed, with Dow -0.36% and Nasdaq +0.73%. Services PMI came in line with analysts expectations, while Services ISM came in higher, 53.8 vs 51. On Friday we'll have Nonfarm Payrolls, last month we had a bad number and we need to see if it Labor market is beginning to fall or if it was just a one month failure. Bank of Canada announced a 25 basis point cut, from 5% to 4.75% as it was expected. There is no relevant data due on the day, so investors will digest all the info that we mentioned before, and be aware of what we still have ahead in the week. Oil is $73.42 USD per barrel, Gold is $2,363.90 USD per ounce, the T10-YR is 4.3240, the British Pound is 1.2772, the Euro is 1.0874 and the Peso is 17.56. Have a nice day.
